Texas Progressive Alliance in anticipation of the November 6 general election

Posted on 10/30/2007. Filed under: texas elections, texas politics, texas progressive alliance |

[This round-up of election news and endorsement posts is brought to you by the Texas Progressive Alliance in anticipation of the November 6 general election. Some of the blogs and sites included in this round-up are not member sites of the Texas Progressive Alliance, but are included in the hopes of giving voters a wider picture of the many issues facing voters in local races around the state. The round-up was compiled by Vince at Capitol Annex.]

On November 6, voters all across Texas will have the opportunity to go to the polls to vote on a variety of issues. First and foremost, voters across Texas will vote on 16 amendments to the Texas Constitution including Proposition 15, the much-touted amendment to fund cancer research in the state.

In addition, voters in some municipalities, most prominently Houston, will be casting votes for city officials including mayors and city council members. College districts, independent school districts, and special districts across the state will also hold elections for their members. A number of cities and school districts will also hold bond elections to fund everything from jail construction to parks and recreation and additional school facilities. Some school districts will also hold tax rate elections to authorize tax rates higher than those allowed by the tax reform plan passed by the Texas Legislature in special session back in 2006.

Texas bloggers have dedicated a considerable amount of coverage to election issues across the state, from the statewide constitutional amendment election to local issues. Much of this coverage is highlighted below.

Local Elections, Bonds, & Referendums

Charles Kuffner at Off The Kuff has exhaustive coverage of local elections in Houston from city council elections to college district elections and city bonds. There are a large number of posts, but mosts can be found in two categories, here and here.

Texas Progressive Alliance Blog Round Up

Posted on 10/29/2007. Filed under: Texas, texas politics, texas progressive alliance |

It’s Monday, and that means it’s once again time for the Texas Progressive Alliance Blog Round-Up. This week’s round-up is complied by Vince from Capitol Annex.

Refinish69 from Doing My Part For The Left is outraged with certain politicians in Fort Worth,Texas. Homophobia Rears Its Nasty Head in Fort Worth City Council Race tells who is being a jerk and how to contact one of them.

Muse was at Armando Walle’s campaign kick-off and reports why it’s time for a change in Texas House District 140. Kevin Bailey (Craddick D) has been serving Craddick and not the district. Walle, who is from the district and has a proven track record of service and leadership, already has a large group of supporters lined up to help him take back 140 for the people.

Phillip Martin of Burnt Orange Report provides a detailed chart and analysis updating what’s going on with the Craddick D’s. The post brought forward an interesting reader response as well.

Vince at Capitol Annex notes that Tom Craddick has borrowed a page from Warren Chisum in announcing that trial lawyers were behind efforts to remove him during the 8oth Legislative Session and wonders why, since he reported it some months ago, it is suddenly “news” to the mainstream media.

In the wake of the Houston Chronicle’s announcement of a “position-elimination program”, PDiddie at Brains and Eggs recounts his personal experience with Hearst newspapers, budgets, and staff cutbacks in The Trouble with the Newspaper Bidness.

Homophobia Rears Its Nasty Head in Fort Worth City Council Race

Posted on 10/28/2007. Filed under: Chuck Silcox, Fortworth, Fortworth city coucil, Joel Burns, Juan Rangel, Texas, texas politics |

Fort Worth City Councilman, Chuck Silcox represents all the true nastiness of the Republican Party. He believes that if your candidate is losing, then you start slinging mud to win the race at any cost. I guess he learned from the likes of Karl Rove and Tom Delay.

The Republican of Fort Worth are running scared of Joel Burns. Joel Burns is a member of the Stonewall Democrats. His campaign web site is at http://joelburns.com . The election is 06 Nov, only two weeks away. Let’s help Joel defeat the negativity of the Republican hate machine and help get him elected.

This past week Chuckie decided his guy wasn’t doing so well so had to start slamming the lead democrat in the nonpartisan race because he is gay.

Councilman raises issue of homosexuality in city race Star Telegram
“This is an excellent time to have Republicans get out and support a Republican: Chris Turner,” Silcox told a group of about 50 at a Fort Worth Republican Women’s Club meeting and a forum for Republican state House District 97 candidates. “We have two people of opposite partisan politics, opposite philosophical persuasions and opposite sexual orientations.

“I didn’t tell you which one was homosexual,” Silcox said as the crowd laughed. Pointing to Turner, Silcox continued: “He’s married to a female, and the other’s married to a male. You make your own mind up.”

Audio of Councilman Chuck Silcox’s statement

This is unacceptable and everyone should contact Councilman Silcox and let him know what they think of his homophobia and bigotry. You can call his council office at 817-392-8803 or email him at crsilcox@aol.com.

I have learned that one of the Democrats running have also had their campaign people bashing Joel and telling people to vote for Juan Rangel instead of Joel because of their kids. Well, Homophobia is unacceptable from either party and I suggest also contacting Juan and letting him know this is not appreciated at all. I would list his info but it seems he doesn’t have a campaign web site that I can find. Homophobia and bigotry have no place in Texas politics and shame on both Silcox and Rangel for playing the hate card. Both of these men owe Joel Burns and the citizens of Fort Worth an apology.

Mikal Watts Not Feeling The Love

Posted on 10/21/2007. Filed under: Mikal watts, rep. rick noriega, texas politics, texas primary, TX-US Senate |

Friday night at the Dallas Democratic Part Fish Fry, a man stood up during Watt’s speech and announced “he’s Anti-Choice” etc and started booing him. I would love to shake that man’s hand!!! Mikal was so hurt by this that he canceled a $10,000 speakers table at the Johnson, Rayburn Richards Harris County Democratic Party dinner. I guess Mikal cannot stand the heat. Texas and Texas Women would be better off if Daddy Warbucks dropped out of the race completely.

The Women of Texas are a tough breed and deserve respect from political candidates and officials. Here is a sign I saw yesterday in Austin.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

When you run for office and say a Texas Woman is smart enough to raise a child but too stupid to make a medical decision you take your chances. While I was not raised in Texas, I respect strong, independent, and smart women. My Mom raised two boys on her own and would not let a man decide her fate. I have met many strong women in Texas through the years and I doubt the women of Texas like the fact that Mikal Watts thinks he knows what is better for them either. A woman’s right to chose is not something any politician should be involved in unless it is guaranteeing that right is never taken away. I have a feeling Mikal will be booed a few more times before he either loses the primary of has enough sense to step out of the race.

MY BODY! MY CHOICE!

Rick Noriega felt nothing but love this weekend at both events where he was welcomed enthusiastically by people attending both events. Rick got a standing ovation when he went up to the microphone to introduce Mayor White of Houston at Saturday night’s event. This did not happen for any of the other people who introduced speakers. Mayor White called Rick the next Senator from Texas.

Rick in his 5 terms in the Texas Legislature has been a champion of Women’s Rights. He respects the independent nature of our strong women and is the man we need in Washington. Rick has proven over and over he is the candidate of the people and actually cares about Texans and not just a title. Join Team Noriega and make a donation.

EXCLUSION OF MILITARY VETERANS FROM STATE EDUCATION PROGRAM

Posted on 10/20/2007. Filed under: Discrimination, Mexican American Legal defense and education fund, Texas, veterans |

It is a sad day when the state of Texas would deny benefits to any veteran who has served to protect this country. Shame on Texas and the Universities and colleges who refuse to offer full benefits to any veteran of the armed services regardless of their citizenship.

ADDITIONAL VETERANS AND UNIVERSITIES ADDED TO LEGAL CHALLENGE OF EXCLUSION OF MILITARY VETERANS FROM STATE EDUCATION PROGRAM

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Today, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), expanded its lawsuit challenging the exclusion of certain military veterans from the Texas Hazlewood Act, which provides a waiver of tuition and fees at Texas public colleges and universities. MALDEF represents veterans who have been denied the waiver and attended the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Houston, North Harris College, as well veterans seeking to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio and West Texas A&M University. In the expanded lawsuit, MALDEF represents six veterans and the American GI Forum of Texas.

Although each plaintiff honorably completed his military service and is otherwise qualified, the State and its institutions have denied the veterans tuition waivers solely because they were not U.S. citizens when they first entered the service—even those veterans who have since become U.S. citizens. All the plaintiff veterans joined the military while they were legal permanent resident immigrants of the United States.

“It is shocking that veterans who served our country in times of war are excluded from this educational program across our State, from smaller community colleges to larger universities,” stated David Hinojosa, MALDEF Staff Attorney and lead counsel in this case. “Equally shocking is that the State and its institutions have not reversed course, even after the filing of this lawsuit.”

The lawsuit maintains that denying veterans who entered the military as legal permanent residents violates the Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution and other federal laws.

Founded in 1968, MALDEF, the nation’s leading Latino legal organization, promotes and protects the rights of Latinos through litigation, advocacy, community education and outreach, leadership development, and higher education scholarships. For more information on MALDEF, please visit: http://www.maldef.org

Another Flat Earther Quits the Race For GOP Nomination

Posted on 10/20/2007. Filed under: 2008 elections, Brownback, Presidential elections, republican |

Brownback’s yellow brick road fell short of the White House and the World breathes a sigh of relief. One less Bigoted Jerk in the race but there are still plenty of Bigots running in the GOP Primary. Well, click your heels Dorothy you ain’t going to DC and hopefully the good people of Kansas will make sure you never get into the Governor’s Mansion in 2010. The only way a governor’s mansion would look good would be on top of you as your ruby slippers fell off your cloven hooves.

Kansas’ Brownback bows out of ’08 race

GOP candidate: My yellow-brick road came just short of the White House

TOPEKA, Kan. – Republican Sen. Sam Brownback abandoned his 2008 presidential bid Friday, his White House aspirations dashed by a lack of support and money.

Said the Kansas senator: “My yellow brick road came just short of the White House this time.”

The conservative managed to gain the support of only 1 percent of Republicans in this month’s Associated Press-Ipsos poll after peaking at 3 percent in June. Fundraising reports this week showed that his campaign was struggling financially, with $94,000 available to spend.

Brownback is expected to run for Kansas governor in 2010 when his second term expires. He has said he won’t run for the Senate again.

GOP Donors As Nauseated By Their Party As We Are

Posted on 10/17/2007. Filed under: bush regime, politics, Republicans, repugnants |

The Money Bags of the Repugnant Party are keeping their wallets closed and not supporting the Flat Earther Candidates for 2008. They are unimpressed with the lack luster candidates or the nasty direction their party has taken while being in power.

The Repugnants, under the leadership of the likes of Tom Delay, Newt Gingrich, and the rest of the slime balls of the Republican Party have become a liability to their party instead of the power brokers(dictators) they all long to be. Their continued moralizing while cheating on their wives and protecting the perverts of the GOP, total stupidity in handling the Iraq War, and buy now pay later attitude to the national budget has scared many of the people who paved their way to power with gold.

Chris Cillizza and Matthew Mosk of the Washington Post do a great write up of the lack luster fund raising bu the GOP in their piece “Many GOP Donors Yet to Open Wallets
Even Bush ‘Rangers’ Are Staying Away”

One of my favorite quotes from their story is:

“Some of the top Bush fundraisers have stepped aside from politics for other reasons. There are those who had personal friendships with the Bush family that do not extend to other candidates, those who have tired of repeatedly soliciting friends for checks. Some are in prison or are dead.”

I wonder how many more of the Bush fundraisers will be in jail before old Georgie Boy finally leaves office.

Texas State Senator Kevin Eltife Needs Some Education

Posted on 10/17/2007. Filed under: Republicans, sex education, Texas, Texas Senate |

The Texas Legislature is well know for stupid and incompetent members and Kevin Eltife is a perfect example. This republican numb nuts wants the Texas Senate to discuss and regulate rather condoms should be handed out at University of Texas Student Health Centers.

With all the other vital issues that face Texas, Senator Numb Nuts wants to discuss condoms rather than health care for Texans, transportation that doesn’t steal millions of acres of Texas ranch land, or ways to lower the drop out or teen pregnancy rate in Texas.

In an interview with KLTV, Tyler’s ABC affiliate which aired Tuesday night, Eltife said he was concerned about free condoms being distributed by the student health clinic at the University of Texas at Tyler, especially that some may have been paid for with tax dollars, since the University Health Clinic at UT-Tyler is operated by the University of Texas Health Center at Tyler:

Is it a proactive health measure, or an encouragement for students to have sex? U.T. Health Clinic’s practice of making free condoms available to student patients came as a shock to Senator Kevin Eltife.

[…]

“If it’s such a good deal, why don’t we talk about it, why don’t we debate it,” said Senator Eltife. “Let’s debate it on campus. Let’s get input from the parents, and the students, and the people who are supporting U.T. Health Center in Tyler and the entire system. Let’s talk about it in the legislature, let’s get it out on the table and discuss it. If it’s a great idea and a great concept, let’s get it out on the table and discuss it.”

The story, aired by of the state’s most conservative local television station (well-known for its “” segments), is the first of a two-part series addressing condom distribution by the UT Health Center clinic on the campus of UT Tyler. Part two is scheduled to air Wednesday night.

Part one featured a staff member of the campus clinic explaining that condoms give an opportunity to do some sex education, including explaining that condoms aren’t a fool-proof method of protection from sexually transmitted diseases:

Since the clinic opened a year and a half ago, it has given away about 6,000 condoms. The majority of those, donated by state health services and local agencies like Tyler AIDS Services.

“In response to the students requesting condoms be available, I felt like it was a prime opportunity to be able to provide education to the students,” said nurse practitioner Kerry Scruggs. “As appropriate, I talk to them about safer sex practices, encourage the use of condoms if they choose to be sexually active, and talk to them about the sexually transmitted diseases. Condoms may or may not help prevent some of that.”

It also featured Eltife, who mentioned several times that he believed parents of students at the university would be concerned if they knew free condoms were being distributed free by the campus health clinic–which receives taxpayer funds:

“I had no idea and I’d imagine most parents don’t know either,” said Senator Eltife. “I can assure you there are a lot of parents whose kids are going there who would probably not be happy about what they’re doing.”

No parents of students were interviewed to actually express any concerns about condom distribution.

KLTV_CONDOM_POLL UT Tyler, while historically a “commuter school,” has in the past decade significantly expanded its reach, attracting students from across Texas and the nation and building 15 sports teams and finally gaining full NCAA membership. And, in spite of being located in conservative Tyler, Eltife and KLTV seem to be the only ones in an uproar about distribution of condoms on the UT Campus. The television station is even running a poll on the front page of its website. Unsurprisingly, shortly after KLTV’s 10 p.m. newscast Tuesday night, those favoring distribution of condoms outnumbered those who didn’t favor the practice.

As KLTV noted, some of the roughly 6,000 condoms distributed by the university since the clinic opened were not paid for with tax dollars, but were donated by a private agency, Tyler AIDS Services.

Eltife soon to be known as Senator Numb Nuts proves yet again that Republicans are so caught up in preaching at people they can not see reality through all their righteous Bull Shit. He would rather students contract sexually transmitted diseases or have unwanted pregnancies than learn a few rules of safe sex.

Texas Progressive Alliance Blog Round-Up.

Posted on 10/15/2007. Filed under: Texas, texas progressive alliance |

It’s Monday, and that means it is time again for the Texas Progressive Alliance Blog Round Up. This week’s round-up is compiled by Vince from Capitol Annex.

Barney Frank responds to GLBT activists: “Now, this is the issue: Does a political party say to its most militant, committed, ideologically driven believers in purity that they have a veto over what the party does?” Evan at The Caucus Blog responds.

BossKitty at Bluebloggin asks why are so many Texans still illiterate?

The Texas Cloverleaf endorses Karen Guerra for 16th District Court Judge in Denton County.

Burnt Orange Report highlights the hard work being done across the nation. A broad coalition has launched a campaign to override President Bush’s SCHIP veto and Kay Granger is public enemy number 1 in Texas. Ads, analysis, polls, and outrage… BOR has it all.

North Texas Liberal asks, “Could Congress override Bush’s veto?” Speaker Pelosi and Sen. Kennedy seem to think that SCHIP is worth fighting for. So do we.

Vince from Capitol Annex notes that Kay Granger should have known better when it comes to her recent “no” vote on the reauthorization and expansion of SCHIP.

Gary at Easter Lemming Liberal News cannot stop writing about conservative bloggers repeatedly attacking a family who were in a terrible automobile accident and received government health care and liked it. Maybe next time your kids are in the hospitable you’ll be attacked by right-wing idiots and more slime in the right-wing noise machine.

McBlogger has a story up about a State Representative you should know.

A supervisor for CPS Energy in San Antonio has a hangman’s noose displayed in his cubicle. PDiddie at Brains and Eggs posts the details, including a photo.

Muse notes that Kay Bailey Hutchinson is trying out harder helmet hair styles so that the words of mean bloggers will bounce right off her in her imaginary (or not) run for governor in 2010.

Warning from TXsharon: Calibrate your outrage meter before visiting Bluedaze to read how Bush policies have weakened the Clean Water Act so Texas water is no longer fit for drinking, swimming or fishing.

CouldBeTrue from South Texas Chisme notes that Presidential Candidate Tom Tancredo wants to build that d*mn fence north of Brownsville. Either you’re with the fence or he’ll move the boundaries so your town’s part of Mexico.

Unsurprised at Al Gore’s Nobel Peace Prize, nor at his acceptance speech, Hal at Half Empty surprises everyone with the Moonwalking Mannequin Bird.

Rattlebrain Randy prefers a little bit of disaster – sure it may hurt his constituents, but it helps his friends in the insurance industry, notes Blue 19th.
At Texas Kaos, diarist persiancowboy invites members of the general public to sign on to the complaint against rogue Judge Sharon Keller for her callous use of judicial power.

Off the Kuff reports that State Rep. Garnet Coleman is urging AG Greg Abbott to sue to block a recent Center for Medicaid and State Operations directive that will result in the loss of CHIP coverage for thousands of children.

Stop Cornyn is fuming about Cornyn’s vote against children. After voting against Texas children twice, now Junior John wants a watered down version to save face. It is time to fully fund children’s health insurance.
